Split-system central air conditioning or heat pump systems typically have two units — one outdoors and one indoors — to keep you comfortable. If your units are correctly matched, your system will be more efficient and will likely have a longer service life.
Are Mismatched HVAC Systems a Problem?
Mismatched HVAC systems can occur if one unit is older than the other or if the system was not matched during installation. When this happens, you can encounter numerous issues, such as:
- Less efficiency and high utility bills.
- A home that is too cool or warm for comfort.
- Breakdowns and unreliable function.
- More money spent on frequent parts replacement or repairs.
If your system is mismatched, manufacturers may not honor your warranty, even if one of the units is newer. Quite simply, the blowers, coils, wiring and other parts of the two machines may not be compatible, which typically places added stress on one unit. This additional workload may cause the harder-working unit to function incorrectly and shorten how long it will continue to operate.
Is My HVAC System Correctly Matched?
It may be difficult to tell just by looking at your system. Some mismatched systems seem to work together for a time, only to break down sooner than they should. You could be faced with higher utility bills and not realize the cause. The best way to determine whether your units are matched is to verify the HVAC system was installed according to Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Institute (AHRI®) standards.
If your system was installed according to AHRI guidelines, it is correctly matched. You can confirm this by asking your installer for an AHRI reference number and looking it up on ahridirectory.org or by asking for an AHRI certificate. If you don’t have an AHRI number, look for the model names and numbers of your units and enter them both at ahridirectory.org to see whether they are matched.
If you need to update or fix your HVAC system, you can take steps to ensure your system matches correctly. Always work with a certified and experienced HVAC technician who follows AHRI guidelines. If only one unit is broken, it is still wise to replace both. Trying to combine one older unit with a newer one can place an undue burden on the updated component and make your entire system work less effectively.
